E7018 is a standard designation for a low-hydrogen shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) electrode defined by the AWS A5.1 Specification (AWS Standard for Carbon Steel Electrodes for Shielded Metal Arc Welding). Each part of the designation corresponds to critical welding performance indicators:

 

Designation Component Meaning Specific Parameters
E Electrode (for SMAW) Indicates a hand-held electrode used in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW, also known as "stick welding").
70 Minimum tensile strength of weld metal 70 ksi (kips per square inch), approximately equivalent to 482 MPa (megapascals) - classifies it as a high-strength weld electrode.
1 Welding position Suitable for all-position welding (flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions), offering strong versatility.
8 Coating type + applicable current - Coating: Low-hydrogen potassium type (low hydrogen content, ≤8 mL/100g; premium grades ≤5 mL/100g).
