Products Description
AWS A5.9/ASME SFA 5.9 is the specification for welding consumables like wire, electrodes and rods for arc welding of stainless and heat-resisting steels. Duplex class ER2209 Stainless Flux Core Wire gives the balance of Austenite and Ferrite microstructure in the as-welded condition, it contains 22% Cr and 8% Ni so as to offers high strength, excellent ductility and corrosion resistance, is the MIG, TIG welding material of duplex stainless steels 2205(SS31803 and SS32205). It has been widely used for pipe and plate welding in the field of offshore, oil and gas, chemical process and other industries where need corrosion resistance and high temperature.
Product characteristics
- Duplex Stainless Steel: Made of austenitic-ferritic duplex stainless steel, ensuring high tensile strength.
- Corrosion Resistant: Offers excellent resistance to stress corrosion, cracking, and pitting.
- Versatile Welding: Specifically designed for joining 22% Cr duplex stainless steel base materials, especially 2205.
- Temperature Range: Suitable for a wide temperature range, from cryogenic levels to 300°C.
- Industry Applications: Widely used in the petrochemical, offshore, acid gas, and chemical transportation sectors.

- Key steps:
1. Pre-welding treatment: remove oil and rust from the surface of the base material and welding wire, and grind the groove to metallic luster.
2. Preheating: When the base material thickness is ≥10mm, preheat to 150-300℃ to reduce the risk of cold cracks.
3. Interlayer control: Multi-layer welding needs to control the layer temperature ≤150℃ to avoid excessive ferrite.
4. Environmental requirements: wind speed ≤1.0m/s, humidity ≤60% to prevent pores.

| Special fields | High Cl⁻ environment equipment, LNG tank linings | Casting Duplex Alloy |
Notes
- Storage: Store in a sealed, ventilated and dry place, avoid contact with acid, alkali and oil, and keep away from dust after unpacking.
- Process verification: Since welding energy directly affects performance (such as ferrite content), process evaluation is required before formal welding.
- Compatibility: It is only recommended for matching duplex steel (such as 2205), and avoid mixing with austenitic or martensitic steel.
- Safety protection: Wear a gas mask during welding to prevent inhalation of metal fumes such as Cr and Ni.
FAQ
Q: Can ER2209 Stainless Flux Core Wire be used for welding common stainless steel (such as 304)?
A: Not recommended. ER2209 is designed for duplex steel and its composition is quite different from 304, which may cause weld brittleness.
Q: Does the choice of shielding gas affect corrosion resistance?
A: Yes. Ar+O₂ mixed gas can improve arc stability, while Ar+N₂ can increase the nitrogen content of the weld and further improve pitting resistance
Q: Is heat treatment required after welding?
A: Usually not. However, if the nitrogen content of the base material is low (such as some 2205 plates), solution treatment is recommended to balance the dual phase ratio.

Product Trends
Flux-cored welding wire (such as ER2209 FC) is gradually becoming popular. Its deposition efficiency is 30% higher than that of solid welding wire, but attention should be paid to slag cleaning.
